Located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Beijing and near the Temple of Azure Clouds at the north foot of Xishan (Western Hill), the Temple of Recumbent Buddha was built during the Tang Dynasty (618 A.D. - 907A.D.) and boasts a history of more than 1300 years. Initially named as Doulv Si or Shou’an Si, this Temple is a Buddhist Temple as well as one of the famous ancient temples in Beijing.
The existent recumbent Buddha was made by sandalwood in Tang Dynasty. Later, in the temple stood a bronze recumbent Buddha made in Yuan Dynasty. That is exactly the reason why it received the name of the Temple of Recumbent Buddha. |
